Benedikt Ahrens is a postdoctoral research assistant in the business unit Geosciences Lab at the Fraunhofer IEG in Bochum, Germany. Until the end of 2019 and after completing his doctorate in the field of Experimental Geophysics at the Ruhr-University Bochum, he worked as a research associate at the University of Applied Sciences in the Reservoir Engineering and Rock Physics group within the International Geothermal Centre in Bochum, Germany. His doctoral thesis is entitled “Experimental analysis of the frequency dependence of elastic and hydraulic properties of fractured rocks”.
His research interests lie in the area of rock deformation under in situ conditions (i.e. temperature and stress) in the context of fractured reservoir characterization. Using a multi-methodological approach of conventional and in-house developed laboratory techniques and experimental setups, microstructural analysis, and analytical modelling, he investigates the structure and state of rocks, as well as rock formations from constraints on the spatial distribution of their physical properties during elastic and inelastic deformation. Of his particular interest are the interrelation between elastic and hydraulic properties of intact and fractured reservoir rocks, their frequency and scaling dependence, and their contributions of hydro-mechanical coupling to in situ processes.
