Sam investigates the impact of fluids on the mechanical properties of rocks and other porous materials. His focus has been on understanding the fluid related physical processes contributing to the attenuation of seismic waves. Sam is keen on utilising multidimensional imaging techniques to integrate rock mechanics and multiphase flow experiments with numerical simulations. In this way he hopes to make a contribution to improving seismic monitoring technologies and the development of contingency measures to improve the safe storage of carbon dioxide.
After completing his PhD at the University of Lausanne in 2017, he was awarded an Early Postdoc.Mobility Fellowship by the Swiss National Science Foundation to pursue an independent 18 month project at Stanford University and ENS Paris. He was educated at Boston University and ETH Zurich, where he received a BA and MSc., respectively, providing him with a broad background in earth sciences.
