Luan received his Doctor of Engineering degree at the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Ruhr-University Bochum in 2017 for his work on computational approaches for subsurface characterization in mechanized tunneling driven by both surface settlement and tunnel seismic waves. Before that, he finished a M.Sc. program in Computational Engineering at the Ruhr-University Bochum (2011) and a B.Eng. study in Automation at Can Tho University in Vietnam (2008).
Luan's research experience is centered on the use and development of inversion and imaging methods in geotechnical and civil engineering applications that make use of state-of-the-art theoretical and computational principles and the increasingly powerful computing power. Since 2017 Luan has been with International Geothermal Centre in Bochum working on developing and testing practical computation workflows for ultrasound-based material characterization and nondestructive testing. His recent work explores the use of full wavefield simulation, reverse-time imaging, and full-waveform inversion for high-resolution ultrasonic imaging of engineered structures such as concrete and thin-walled pipes.
