Luan received his Doctor of Engineering degree at the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Ruhr-University Bochum in 2017 for his work on computational approaches for subsurface characterization in mechanized tunneling driven by both surface settlement and tunnel seismic waves. Before that, he finished a M.Sc. program in Computational Engineering at the Ruhr-University Bochum (2011) and a B.Eng. study in Automation at Can Tho University in Vietnam (2008).
Luan's research experience is centered on the use and development of inversion and imaging methods in geotechnical and civil engineering applications that make use of state-of-the-art theoretical and computational principles and the increasingly powerful computing power. In addition, he has worked on exploring the use of full wavefield simulation, reverse-time imaging, and full-waveform inversion for high-resolution ultrasonic imaging of engineered structures such as concrete and thin-walled plates and pipes. As a geotechnical engineer, he designs deep foundations, retaining walls, and soil improvement systems while utilizing the power of computational methods to achieve optimal design solutions, and uphold the observational method for geotechnical design by using computer-based design optimization and back-analysis, respectively
